The starter cranks a stock flathead engine at rpms. Two brush Ford generators use the shunt type generator design. The field circuit has an internally grounded field. Grounding the field removes all external regulation on the generator and it will go immediately to full charge mode. If the ammeter shows charge when you ground the field, the regulator is at fault. If the ammeter does not show charge, the generator is defective. Note the generator may have shorted out the regulator when it went bad. Since the 6 volt regulators are still mechanical and can be set, it may be beneficial to know what is where inside them.

It’s this type of experience that brings about the many queries we get for volt conversion kits. Before we do that, lets see what the alternatives are to avoid converting and for those machines that really should not be converted.
To Convert or not to Convert? If your tractor is a working tractor, there is little reason not to convert beyond the cost. A 12 volt system is a bolt-on cure that masks the many ailments of hard starting machines without the time and expense of teardown and rebuild. The original 6-volt system will suffice if the tractor is well maintained with optimum tuning, good compression, correct gas flow, and minimal losses in the wiring.
In the real world, it is difficult to invest the time necessary to keep up on all these issues and volt conversion becomes inviting. Still, the most compelling reason to convert to volt is that your existing 6-volt system has serious problems and requires replacement anyway. When this occurs, it may actually be easier and less expensive to convert. Locating original components may be very difficult and time-consuming. On the other hand, if your tractor is rare or you’re are restoring it for originality or show, it would be a cardinal sin to update the electrics to ‘s standards.

The points on this 48 model look very good; no pitting, all was clean, as if it had been re-done recently. The fellow I got the tractor from had put plug wires on it, and the ends were not installed correctly The tractor had been driven close to 20 miles when the man I got it from drove it home after he bought it.
The tractor was sputtering and missing a lot before I worked on it today.

KingofHeart 1 year ago Reply I’m sorry to be rude, but if someone want’s to build a Tesla coil, these are not the instructions you should follow. It does not seem like the author took into account any of the physics behind how a Tesla coil works. A Tesla coil is an LC inductor-capacitor circuit, the primary and secondary coils being the inductors, and the capacitor obviously and the top load being the capacitors.
The values of the capacitors and inductors matter, without getting into the physics too much, there is a proportion to the two circuits the primary and secondary , so that the system is resonant. With how poorly the secondary is wound here, I doubt that the author had any specific inductance value in mind, and same goes for the primary. The final nail in the coffin is that the capacitance of the capacitor is not even specified, so this was clearly assembled without much thought.
Like the author said at the end, the Tesla coil relies on resonance, but only by some crazy odds could this system be resonant. That’s not to say that it won’t produce sparks if it isn’t resonant, but you would be wasting a lot of the power from the transformer, and would get some very underwhelming results. To follow these instructions would be a colossal waste of money.

Oct 22, · I purchased a 6 volt replacement coil for my 29 Plymouth. My Plymouth has the original electrical set up – 6 volt positive ground. The coil is the same as a NAPA Echlin IC9, and has two terminals marked + and – (rather than “Bat” and “Dist”).

My question I have is that when I hook up the 6 volt battery positive ground the starter just spins over but the car won’t start. Any input would be appreciated. My loggin minncat was a carry over from a caterpillar site. I had a few ‘s cats but my wife and kids didn’t care for them all that much!
I’m looking forward to including the family on the car restoration. They think it’s pretty cool. Your Mercury came from the factory as a positive ground system. The positive battery connection goes to the block. Were the cables hooked up to a battery when you got it or did you decide which cables were positive and negative when you hooked them up? BUT that has nothing to do with your problem. If the starter motor is turning over but the engine is not turning over then you have a problem with the starter bendix most likely.
When the starter turns over centrifugal force throws the bedix and it meshes with the flywheel turning over the engine.
